Pet Peeve: Product labels stating Vegetarian that aren’t

Yes, the results are in for this fortnight’s poll, but I think I’d like more attention set on this week’s poll. Something that extremely bugs me is when Companies label something vegetarian and it’s not.
Why has this come about, you ask?
I headed to my local supermarket and found some new soup and was quite excited with the varieties available, and, even more so, with the large label “Vegetarian” displayed on them. I grabbed a couple of the different varieties, before having second thoughts to check the back to ensure there were no little disclaimers. To my dismay, I found a tiny disclaimer mentioning that it could have seafood in it.
Ok, some companies may use their production line for foods that have these ingredients, but vegetarians or vegans, do you take that risk?
I certainly don’t and would love your opinion and comments below.
Do you buy products that could “potentially” have seafood bits in it? Where do you draw the line?
I’d appreciate your feedback on the right in the poll and comments below…

As for the results of this week, the majority (83%) of you love cooking shows! I’d be interested in hearing what your favourite cooking shows are? Do you have pay tv and watch the Food Channel religiously? Do you have free-to-air only and just watch what is on? Or, if you don’t why is it that you don’t watch the shows?

I know what you mean about being upset when labels seem vegetarian, but really aren’t. I bought some barbeque sauce once that contained worcestershire sauce, and when I looked closer I realized that worcestershire sauce has anchovies in it (but anchovies weren’t listed under the ingredients). So I felt conflicted about whether to use it or not… it was only a small trace ingredient, but still, it is animal-based. I think I used it once, but then felt really upset about it and decided I wouldn’t use it any more. It’s not the end of the world if I accidentally eat something with an animal product in it, but I get upset when labels are misleading. For me being vegan is about making conscious choices to avoid animal-based ingredients, and yes– we are relying on the “trustworthiness” of manufacturers to accurately label their products.
It doesn’t bother me if I eat something that is produced in the same facility that makes products with milk/eggs, etc.– that just really doesn’t bother me at all. And I know that when I eat out I take the risk that some of my food will be made on the same surfaces that meat is prepared on– and I am usually ok with that. Some things you just can’t help, especially when you’re not the one preparing the food. But I make an effort to only eat plant-based food, and it does bother me when labels seem to conceal animal sources that might actually be there.

Thanks Katie, I’ve done a similar thing with a sauce and also butter here which used plant sterols for Omega-3, but then wasn’t vegetarian as it contained gelatine in it. I have to say I was really disappointed with that.
It’s good to hear other vegan’s and vegetarian’s thoughts on foods are produced at the same facility. I intentionally buy another brand, if it does have a label mentioning “may contain seafood” etc, but maybe I should relax a little.
I don’t even consider the whole restaurant thing - I have to admit! I guess there’s a little bit of trust involved when it’s vegetarian or vegan.
