Recipe: Dutch Balls
Print This Post

Image: Dutch balls with a chilli coconut sauce and basmati rice.
Although my mum was born in Sri Lanka, she is of dutch descent. If she was in Sri Lanka, my mum would be called a “Burgher.” If you’d like to find a little about this, wikipedia has a great entry on it.
From the recipe title, you can see why I’m actually mentioning this. These are pretty much a family tradition of the Dutch in Sri Lanka. This is unlike the traditional recipe, as I have changed this to suit my individual tastes. This recipe usually consists of mince and is not spicy, but I have veganised it and heated up with some chilli.
These babies can be eaten on their own, or in a roll but I’ve added a coconut sauce and basmati rice for something different. Feel free to play around with it and pass through your favourite serving ideas!

Makes:
- 10 very large balls
Ingredients:
Dutch Balls
- 1/2 onion diced
- salt
- white pepper
- 1/2 cup gluten flour
- 300 grams vegie mince (I used Sanitarium)
- 1 slice of white bread
- 2 tsps dill
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 4 cloves
- 1 tsp garlic mince
- 1/2 tsp ginger mince
- 2 tsps lemon juice
- 1 tbs green masala paste
- 1 tbs egg replacer with water
- dry breadcrumbs for coating
- olive oil
Coconut Sauce
- 2 tbs coconut cream
- 4 tbs water
- 1 tbs garam masala paste
Instructions:
- Brown your onions in a little olive oil with some seasoning.
- Blitz down the bread to breadcrumbs and add into a big jug with the gluten flour and vegie mince. Stir thoroughly.
- Using a mortar and pestle, add a little salt and the cloves and grind in. Add a little water and grind again. Scoop the mixture out and add to the jug.
- Mix all your other ingredients for the balls in the jug.
- In a bowl, pour some dried breadcrumbs.
- Grab handfuls of the mixture and mould with your palm.
- Roll the meatballs in the breadcrumbs.
- In a pan, heat up some oil and pan-fry the meatballs. Allow them to brown each side.
- In a seperate pan, all the ingredients for the sauce and simmer for a minute.
- Place the meatballs on some cooked rice and pour your sauce over the top before serving.

Thanks Shelvia!
You can find gluten flour in most good health food shops near their buckwheat and other flour types. If you are having trouble, shoot through a private email with your suburb or where near you work and I might know some vegetarian places near you!

lol - this is going to be funny. I can’t seem to find your email address anywhere in the website.
Any vegetarian place around Melbourne CBD is good.
Thanks heaps!
Have fun in Adelaide.

Hi Shelvia,
Apologies for that! In the city, there’s a couple of Health Food Shops on Elizabeth St that should stock it. The one right near Cnr Elizabeth and Lonsdale St should have it.
Also the big discount Vitamin Me store at Corner Elizabeth and Little Collins Street has it. It’s downstairs with all the Vegetarian/Vegan products.
In Collingwood on Smith St, there’s a great Organic/Vegetarian Health Food Shop, which I walk to and grab it during my lunch break.
Hope it helps!
