Recipe: Vegan Hot Dogs

There’s one thing I love is hot dogs, especially in batter, and, although in Australia, Sanitarium make a great version, I really do want to try and make one from scratch. This isn’t quite there yet, but this hot dog (withouth the colouring) has the subtle flavour of one. If you chuck on some ketchup and cheese or your usual hot dog dressings, I’m sure you’ll think this is as good as the real thing! I sure didn’t notice it with my cheese and ketchup (shown above).
Whilst the hot dogs are vegan, the bread and cheese above are not. For those vegan users, subsitute your rolls and cheese for vegan versions and you’ll be mighty fine with this too!
Now, to just get the right colouring…

Serves:
- 11 of various sizes (see above photo)
Ingredients:
- 1 cup gluten flour
- 1 tbs egg replacer
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbs dark brown sugar
- 2 tbs nutritional yeast
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1.5 tbs barbecue sauce
- 1 tsp garlic flakes
- 1.5 tsp paprika powder
- pinch pepper
- 8 tbs besan flour
- 4 tbs “00″ flour
- 3 tbs rice flour
- 1 tbs olive oil
- 2 cups water
Instructions:
- Mix all the dry ingredients together well.
- Mix the barbecue sauce in with the warm water before stirring into the dry ingredients.
- Sit aside for 10 minutes.
- Put some water in your steam and allow to boil.
- Grab some foil and 1 heaped tablespoon of mixture. Pour in a line at the bottom of the foil and tightly grab the end rolling the foil around. Repeat until there’s no more mixture left.
- Place all the hot dogs into your steamer and leave for fifteen minutes.
- Remove the foil and pan fry each side to brown before serving on your roll and dressings of choice!

I just found your recipe from searching the web, but am not sure what “besan flour ” and “00″ flour is. I want to try this version of the new steamed hot dogs. They sure look good!
