Vegan Steak

Currently I’m trying to perfect the Vegan Steak.  I’ve been researching the ingredients and various steaks made by manufacturer’s to get an idea of what goes in them and they appear to be quite easy to work out.   The problem is, getting the consistency and look and feel.

This first attempt isn’t that bad, although I’d really like to get a better look for the dish.  I used the same method as Julie Hasson’s vegan sausages, although it doesn’t quite work.

The taste though, is a different story!  It’s got a very smokey, meaty flavour and is quite delicious as a steak sandwich! Throw in some ketchup and a little cheese and you’ve got one mean steak sandwich!

Serves:

  • 8 steaks

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup TVP
  • 1 cup gluten flour
  • 2 tsp egg replacer
  • 2 tsp onion flakes
  • 2 tsp garlic mince
  • cracked black pepper
  • 1.5 cup water
  • pinch salt
  • 1 tsp rosemary
  • 1/2 tsp molasses
  • 1/2 tsp parisian browning sauce
  • 8 tbs besan flour

Instructions:

  1. Mix all the dry ingredients together well.
  2. Stir through the water and allow the mixture to get quite doughy.
  3. Sit aside for 30 minutes if you can wait!
  4. Put some water in your steam and allow to boil.
  5. Grab some foil and half a handful of the dough.  Create a patty and then form into a steak shape on your foil.  Pack it tightly.  Repeat until there’s no more mixture left.
  6. Place all the steaks into your steamer and leave for twenty minutes.
  7. Remove the foil and shallow fry each side to brown before serving!
