What’s on the Menu: Week Starting 07/04/2008

This week, I went out to a Vegetarian restaurant that has recently opened up in Lygon St, East Brunswick called vege2go. It’s not in the usual spot of restaurants in Lygon St, but further down the tracks nearer to Moreland St. The place itself is very bright and colourful with a great variety of vegetarian mains and sides.
I headed here with a friend after seeing the place advertised through the search engines and have wanted to try it since. The food is quite healthy, fresh and delicious serving your traditional and non-traditional varieties of Italian food.
My friend and I grabbed a main each with three serves of salad for $12.95 each and shared the lot. We still weren’t able to try everything on the menu, although it did make for variety! For the mains, we tried the polenta and frittata which were both great tasting! The sides included peperonata, garlic-tossed broccoli, potato salad and rice salad. Not only was everything we had was delicious and extemely cheap, but the servings were very generous, so much so, that we couldn’t eat everything on the plate!
Not only were the meals great, but the service was fantastic. I had the opportunity to talk to some of the family who own the store and found them extremely friendly! The whole family have gone vegetarian (with one vegan) at various stages, including the mum a year ago. They opened the restaurant for environmental reasons, but also wanted to open somewhere that did not have your traditional vegetarian meals of Indian or Chinese. I think it’s definitely a winner for a combination of reasons - great price, delicious food and wonderful staff!
If you do live around the area, give this cafe a go - both meat-eaters and vegetarians alike will enjoy this take of Italian Vegetarian food.
Continuing with the Italian theme, this week’s menu include a potato pizza which is very traditional to regions of Italy. It’s one thing that I would try to get at most places in Italy whilst travelling. This did cause a mishap in one spot, but find out more about that in the recipe entry tomorrow!
As for the other meals, there’s a lovely soup with whole lemons and a mushroom pasta to top it off!
